HONORARY PROCLAMATION DECLARING
APRIL 26, 2013 AS
ARBOR DAY
WHEREAS, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a
special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and
WHEREAS, this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a
million trees in Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, 2013 is the 141"1 Anniversary of Arbor Day, and it is now observed throughout the
nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating
and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and
provide habitat for wildlife; and
WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our
fires, and countless other wood products, increase property values, enhance the economic
vitality of business areas, beautify our community, and trees are a source of joy and spiritial
renewal; and
WHEREAS, the City of Arroyo Grande has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National
Arbor Day Foundation for the 31"1 consecutive year and desires to continue its tree-planting
ways.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Tony Ferrara, Mayor of the City of Arroyo
Grande, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby recognize and proclaim Friday, April 26 1 h as
"ARBOR DAY" in the City of Arroyo Grande, and urge all citizens to celebrate "ARBOR DAY'', to
support efforts to care for our trees and woodlands, and to support our City's community forestry
program.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that all citizens are urged to plant a tree to gladden the heart and
promote the well-being of this and future generations.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the
Seal of the City of Arroyo Grande to be affixed this 23rd day of April 2013.
