SOUTH COUNTY SANITARY SERVICE RATE INCREASE REQUEST DATE: MAY 14, 2013 Attached is correspondence received regarding the South County Sanitary Service Rate increase request. c: City Manager City Attorney City Clerk May 8, 2013 City of Arroyo Grande 300 East Branch St Arroyo Grande, CA 93420 Attn: City Clerk To Our City Councilmen: ii I have been an Arroyo Grande resident and property owner since 1973. Throughout my years living in this city I have raised my family and been active over the years in many community organizations. That is to say, I've supported this community both actively and financially over the past 40 years. Recently it was brought to your attention to decide on rate increases for the Garbage Company to continue to provide safe, environmentally sound and reliable solid waste removal as well as the new option of offering a 20 gallon waste wheeler. I just contacted the garbage company to order my 20 gallon can to find out you voted it down! You managed to vote in the price increase but not to offer the smaller waste wheeler. As a senior citizen, I most times have only one bag of refuse a week. I sometimes don't even put my trash out because of that. Thus, I was very excited to think on option was being offered to help people on lower and fixed incomes. Our incomes don't increase but utility bills do and an option was being offered to help in that situation and you declined it. Why? Do you not care enough about your seniors in this area to provide that? I hope you will reconsider the option of offering the 20 gallon waste wheeler. It would be a help to many in this community and a show that the City of Arroyo Grande cares about all of its citizens. The city must reflect economic reality. The council must become tight fisted with the money of the citizens. Increased payments fuel inflation. What percentage of the proposed rates is for increased labor costs? It should be zero or even minus. There are many workers who would like jobs with a monopoly contractor. Check the California unemployment rate. Maybe there should be more outsourcing. The proposed rate increases does not reflect reality. Regards, Robert Smullen
