Proclamation - Childhood Cancer AwarenessCITY OF HONORARY PROCLAMATION DECLARING SEPTEMBER 2013 AS "CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" WHEREAS, families, caregivers, charities, and research groups across the United States, as well as our national government, are observing the month of September as "Childhood Cancer Awareness Month" to · memorlallze the young lives that have been taken too soon, and to honor those fighting and those .who have survived, but yet face major health challenges associated with this disease; and WHEREAS, with an estimated 13,500 children under the age of 18 diagnosed with cancer in 2013, childhood cancer has been Identified as the leading cause of death among children under the age of 18 years, and the Incidence of childhood cancers is increasing at a more rapid rate than any other age group; and WHEREAS, the American Cancer Fund for Children and Kids Cancer Connec~ion provide a variety of vital patient psychosocial services to children undergoing cancer treatment at Santa Barbara Cottage Children's Hospital and City of Hope National Medical Center, as well as participating hospitals throughout the country, thereby enhancing the quality of life for these children and their families; and WHEREAS; each year tens of thousands of children across our country face the battle of cancer with incredible bravery and inspiring hope; however, while progress against some childhood cancers has been made, cure rates for many forms of childhood cancer remain at less than 50 percent. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Tony Ferrara, Mayor of the City of Arroyo Grande, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim the month of September 2013 as "Childhood Cancer Awareness Month" in the City of Arroyo Grande.
