Background
In 2002, City Council approved Public Art Program and Process
In 2006, City Council approved Public Art Donation Program
October, 2011, City Council amended guidelines regarding art
on public property
January, 2013 Arroyo Grande Public Art Committee formed
2014 First public art project

Process
Public Art Panel is the approval authority for the project
City Council must hold a public hearing for the purpose of obtaining community input
Panel consists of:
2 representatives
from the property owner (Nick and Kathy Tompkins);
2 representatives from the County Arts Council (Kathy Teuffel and Jim Trask);
1 ARC (Michael Peachy)
1 Chamber or VIA (Judith Bean);
1 South County Historical Society (Shelly Cochran or Ross Kongadle)

Criteria
Relationship to the social, cultural and historical identity of the area. If the public art is proposed to be located in the Village Core Downtown or Village Mixed Use Districts, the
art piece shall be representative or evocative of the turn of the century historical period;
Evaluation of artistic excellence;
Appropriateness of scale, form, material, content and
design relative to the immediate and general neighborhood;
Appropriateness of proposed materials as regards to structural and surface integrity, protection against vandalism, public
safety and weathering;
Ease of maintenance;
Appropriateness of proposed method of installation of artwork and safety and structural factors involved in installation;
Artist’s experience
in working on comparable projects.

and character. Our support will include but not be limited to identification, funding, installation, support, and maintenance of public works of art.

the work of local and national artists • Respond to and reflect the diverse nature of Arroyo Grande’s population, history and growth • Approach the entire city as a showcase for public
art • Engage the community to encourage public art sponsorship
