A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF ARROYO GRANDE
AUTHORIZING THE DONATION OF HISTORICAL ARTIFACTS
FROM HOOSEGOW PARK TO THE SOUTH COUNTY
HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND AUTHORIZING TEMPORARY
CLOSURE OF LE POINT STREET FOR A RIBBON CUTTING
CEREMONY
WHEREAS, on January 14, 2014, the Arroyo Grande City Council ("Council") approved
a conceptual plan for the Hoosegow Park ADA Improvements involving accessibility and
landscaping improvements with costs shared from various groups in the form of
volunteer labor, material donations, and cash funds; and
WHEREAS, the Council also approved the naming of the park to Howard Mankins
Hoosegow Park; and
WHEREAS, during construction of this phase of the Hoosegow Park Renovation
project, City of Arroyo Grande ("City") staff found an unearthed antique bottle and
observed glass and pottery shards at the project site; and
WHEREAS, LSA Associates, an archaeological firm hired by the City to complete a
Phase I Archaeological Study, determined that the artifacts, although historically
significant locally, did not warrant further investigation; and
WHEREAS, members of the South County Historical Society conducted an additional
archeological excavation in Howard Mankins Hoosegow Park and unearthed additional
artifacts including eight (8) intact bottles and a bottle stopper; and
WHEREAS, the South County Historical Society is willing to accept and display the
artifacts and has the capability, experience and expertise to catalog, display and provide
care for the artifacts. In addition, visitors to the South County Historical Society
museums will benefit from the ability view these artifacts; and
WHEREAS, it is necessary to temporarily close Le Point Street from Miller Way to
Nevada Street from 9:00 am to noon, on April 25, 2015, in order to hold a ribbon cutting
ceremony for the Hoosegow Park renovation project.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Arroyo
Grande hereby authorizes the donation of artifacts found during construction of the
Hoosegow Park Renovation project to the South County Historical Society; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Arroyo Grande hereby
authorizes the temporary closure of Le Point Street from Miller Way to Nevada Street on
Saturday, April 25, 2015 from 9:00 am to noon for the Howard Mankins Hoosegow Park
Ribbon Cutting ceremony.
