PUBLIC ART PIECE COMMISSIONED BY
THE FIVE CITIES DIVERSITY COALITION
ARTISTS:
3 Students of Arroyo Grande High School; Cassie Travis, Gabriella Santiago, Zoe Newcomb guided by public artist/designer Jim Trask &
coordinated with Curt Eichperger from the Lucia Mar Unified School District.
TITLE:
The title of the piece is "ARBORING OUR ROOTS OF DIVERSITY" represented by a tree shape (arbor) of which the branches will hold
(harbor) a multitude of leaf shapes (diversity), the majority of which will be grouped in the form of continents of the world. The steel branches
will be supported by a 6"diameter steel pole set in concrete.
DESIGN DETAILS:
The steel pole will be shaped into a tree-trunk shape with the addition of GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) being applied by hand over a
steel mesh support over the 6" diameter pipe. This process extends down the trunk to the "roots", of which there are "five" major roots
extending down the two tier, stepped, concrete base. The concrete steps shall present the following words deemed appropriate by the artists:
HERITAGE INDIVIDUALITY CULTURE UNITY COMMUNITY EDUCATION DIVERSITY PEACE.
LOCATION:
The public art is intended to be located at the front entrance to the Arroyo Grande High School, just to the right of the walkway
leading into the campus. It will be visible for the students & visitors entering from the parking lot, seen from a distance by visitors to
the Clark Center, and will be utilizing the available night lighting existing for the landscape.
