Subject: Input from an AG citizen re: fox situation
Dear Ms. Harmon,
I am unable to attend tonight's city council meeting, so I appreciate you reading my input
regarding the fox situation as a citizen of our town.
I personally know some of the individuals who made calls to various city and state agencies
trying to address the issue of the fox. Please know that these folks are some of the biggest
animal lovers I know. I believe them when they say it was never their intention to see the fox
killed. I know many of my fellow citizens saw the fox as a beloved city "pet," but I do take issue
with a wild animal being treated in this manner. Wild animals are meant to be wild. I believe
the best way to honor the fox moving forward is to focus our community attention on
preserving wild spaces for the grey fox and the other beautiful animal species that inhabit our
precious central coast. We can also educate our fellow citizens to leave wildlife alone -don't
raise, feed or play with wild animals -so that the animals can remain wild and free. Perhaps the
city would be able to provide resources to citizens who are experiencing difficulty with a wild
animal so that this situation can be avoided in the future?
Finally, I am VERY disturbed about some of the on line comments directed at the people who
made the calls to get assistance with the fox. My friends are currently living in fear that they
will be physically attacked by other citizens. This is not acceptable and not the kind of town I
want to raise my children in. Like everyone in town, I am sad the fox is dead, but attempting to
punish our fellow citizens will not bring the fox back and only serves to divide our caring, local
community. The best way forward to prevent a future problem is preservation and education.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
Virginia Roof
