Regarding City Council Agenda Item 8-14-18 / 12 b
Mayor Jim Hill
City Council Members Barbara Harmon, Tim Brown, Kristin Barneich and Caren Ray
City Manager Jim Bergman
In reviewing the Agenda Item 12 b I have the following concerns and comments.
Contributions of Commissions that are being considered to be disbanded.
1. This will eliminate the involvement of at least 15 worthy volunteers that bring
commitment and expertise to each commission. Rather than continually encouraging
more citizens to be involved this actually will eliminate those opportunities .
2. Will discourage further involvement by Citizens as there will be fewer opportunities to
volunteer service in our community.
3. The Commissions have served as a valuable stepping stone for individuals to develop
leadership skills and become educated in the government process and procedure.
We have seen many Commissioners that have continued to serve as Mayors, Council
members, Supervisors and even higher level elected or appointed office. The
commission positions have given these citizens an avenue to explore further
opportunities to serve our community at a variety of levels.
Citizen Notices
How will the community be notified to specific issues that will affect their
neighborhoods? Currently citizens are notified by mail of a particular item that would
concern them. Will a similar announcement go out to citizens inviting them to attend a
staff discussion when their neighborhood is affected?
In my opinion publishing a Public Notice in a newspaper does not replace the need for a
notice to affected homes or businesses in their neighborhoods.
Thank you for your continued service to Arroyo Grande
