CC 2021-05-11_08g Appointment to AGTBID Advisory Board MEMORANDUM TO: CITY COUNCIL FROM: WHITNEY McDONALD, CITY MANAGER BY: JESSICA MATSON, CITY CLERK SUBJECT: CONSIDERATION OF APPOINTMENT TO THE ARROYO GRANDE TOURISM BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT ADVISORY BOARD DATE: MAY 11, 2021 SUMMARY OF ACTION: Appointment of Sean Dasmann to the Arroyo Grande Tourism Business Improvement District (AGTBID) Advisory Board. IMPACT ON FINANCIAL AND PERSONNEL RESOURCES: There is no financial or staffing impact from the recommended action. RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended the City Council appoint Sean Dasmann to the Arroyo Grande Tourism Business Improvement District Advisory Board. BACKGROUND: The AGTBID was formed in 2013 to provide revenue to defray the costs of services, activities, and programs to market and promote lodging businesses in the City through the promotion of scenic, recreational, cultural, and other attractions. From its inception, the AGTBID Board consisted of three (3) members from the lodging industry. On February 13, 2018, the Council approved an amendment to the AGTBID Bylaws amending the AGTBID Board membership to a minimum of three (3) but not more than nine (9) members, 2/3rds of which shall be owners of lodging businesses within the AGTBID or others with knowledge of tourism and/or the lodging industry. ANALYSIS OF ISSUES: There are currently four (4) active members on the AGTBID Advisory Board. Sean Dasmann, General Manager for the Agrarian Hotel, has expressed interest in serving on the Board and has submitted an application. Mr. Dasmann has worked extensively in hospitality, management and events and grew up in Arroyo Grande. Item 8.g. - Page 1 CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERATION OF APPOINTMENT TO THE ARROYO GRANDE TOURISM BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT ADVISORY BOARD MAY 11, 2021 PAGE 2 The South County Chambers of Commerce, who administer the AGTBID, submitted a letter of recommendation (Attachment 2) for Mr. Dasmann’s appointment. It is recommended that Sean Dasmann be appointed to the AGTBID Advisory Board. ALTERNATIVES: The following alternatives are provided for the Council's consideration: 1.Appoint Sean Dasmann to the AGTBID Advisory Board; 2.Do not appoint Sean Dasmann to the AGTBID Advisory Board and solicit interest from other applicants; or 3.Provide other direction to staff. ADVANTAGES: Approval of the appointment will expand the Advisory Board to five (5) members and add a long-time community member with significant experience in the local lodging industry. DISADVANTAGES: No disadvantages have been identified regarding this item. ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW: No environmental review is required for this item. PUBLIC NOTIFICATION AND COMMENTS: The Agenda was posted at City Hall and on the City's website in accordance with Government Code Section 54954.2. Attachment: 1. Application – S. Dasmann 2. Letter of recommendation from South County Chambers of Commerce Item 8.g. - Page 2 Attachment 1 Item 8.g. - Page 3 Item 8.g. - Page 4 April 28, 2021 To the City Council of Arroyo Grande , I recommend Sean Dasmann, general manager of Agrarian Hotel in Arroyo Grande, as a candidate for the AGTBID Board of Directors . As a hotel manager in Arroyo Grande, he has a vested interest in attracting tourists to our area and would be an instrumental addition to the Board. The experience he brings from his many years of involvement in hospitality, management, and event planning will undoubtedly be an asset. Sean has already attended the AGTBID meeting and Arroyo Grande Business Meeting , and he is familiar with the importance of tourism in supporting our local economy.
