To the Council:
The South County Historical Society would like to endorse the pursuit of
funding, through Cong. Carbajal, of repairs to Mr. Short's Swinging Bridge.
It's been 35 years since substantive restoration work was done on the
bridge. It is indeed an "iconic" part of downtown and happily leads to
Heritage Square and the Society's museum complex.
Thank you for considering the opportunity to restore a structure that linked
Newton Short to his fruit orchards and now links Arroyo Grande to its rich
agricultural past.
My best wishes, and, again, I am looking forward to seeing you at the April
26 Council meeting for the proclamation that recognizes World War II
Commemoration Week.

RE: Request to Adopt a Resolution to Support of Fiscal Year 2023 Community Project Funding
Request
Dear Honorable Mayor Caren Ray Russom and City Council Members:
I write to share our strong support for the FY23 Community Project Funding program request
by the City of Arroyo Grande for restoration of the city’s historic Swinging Bridge. The Swinging
Bridge, first built in 1875, is one of the only bridges of its kind in the state of California and a popular
landmark for residents and visitors to view the Arroyo Grande Creek.
The nearly150-year-old the iconic bridge now suffers from structural deficiencies in its
foundation. Arroyo Grande has identified the Swinging Bridge Project as a previously-approved
Infrastructure Capital Improvement Project, making it eligible for federal infrastructure improvement
funding under specific federal grant programs. This project will not otherwise be supported by any
grant funding. The Community Project Funding Request will allow rehabilitation and stabilization of
this historic bridge, a vital asset and benefit to the community of Arroyo Grande and the State of
California.
City staff have evaluated the guidance for the specific federal funding programs and have selected the
Swinging Bridge Project as the most suitable and top priority project for this funding opportunity. We stand with
the community and ask the City Council to adopt a resolution in support of Fiscal Year 2023 Community
Project Funding program to rehabilitate the Swinging Bridge.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
All the best,
Chuck Davison, CDME
President & CEO
