Dear Council Members,
I am writing to voice my support of the potential planned project in the Tally Ho Creek.
My husband and I were flooded out of our home on January 9th, 2023, primarily due to the overflow
of the creek, which has silted up over years of neglect and restrictions, and other issues affecting
capacity. There were eight inches of water and mud throughout our house, and two feet of water
and mud in our guesthouse, which is in the back closer to the creek than the house. We were out of
our home for three months, and we were lucky.
All the residents on Tally Ho Road from the 227 Bridge to James Way were affected negatively by the
January 9 and March storms--either their homes were gravely damaged, or their yards were. People
from at least four houses are still homeless, working to get back into them.
Potential future damage looms large, and flooding is almost a given if something is not done. I
understand the creek is a watershed that must be protected and that property lines are unclear,
which complicates matters. However, with the backing of the RCD, CLC, the city and other agencies,
a competent solution is pending—at least it is a start.
I am also aware that long-term maintenance is an issue, but I am certainly willing to consider the
options with the city and can be helpful in networking with neighbors.
Clearly something must be done. I believe we all will benefit from the project and its following
phases.
Thank you.

To: Arroyo Grande City Council,
My wife and I are residents and property owners on Tally Ho Road in
Arroyo Grande. As a result of the flooding on January 9, 2023, our home
was extensively damaged and required tens of thousands of dollars to
repair. The threat of future flooding has reduced the value of our
property, and caused us continuous anxiety and worry.
I strongly urge the AG City Council to support and approve all efforts
to improve the condition of Tally Ho Creek to mitigate and prevent any
future flooding. The current project to restore a portion of the Creek
is a great start. However, to be truly effective, I believe that the
work needs to continue from James Way upstream to Highway 227 and
beyond. Please do your utmost to remove obstacles that might delay or
prevent further Creek improvements.
Thanks,
Vince Petrie

I am a resident of Tally Ho and have been affected by the creek overflowing and
destroying my house/property two times in the past 10 years. The first time we
repaired our home and utilized mitigation factors which we thought would be suffice
to avoid another flood, however after the destructive storms of this past winter, the
creek overflowed twice - in January and March which completely destroyed our
home. We cannot repair our home this time, we have had to demolish it and will need
to rebuild it.
We have been displaced since January and we are not expected to have our home
rebuilt for 12-18 more months. We have 3 school aged children and this has been
traumatizing and completely disruptive to our lives as you can imagine. We lost our
home, furniture and personal belongings. We currently have a major gap in funding
for our rebuild due to a low insurance payout, and what we have been approved for
through a construction loan.
The past 7 months have been devastating to our finances, family life and mental
health. It is a daunting task to decide to rebuild again not knowing if the creek will
back up due to debris and sediment every winter causing it to overflow and impact
our homes.
If the creek is not restored and maintained it is apparent that many people will
continue to live in fear and anxiety under this continued threat. The families that are
affected will carry this financial burden and stress for years to come.
Please approve the process of starting the work in the creek which will hopefully
positively affect the flow of the creek and calm the threat of future flooding.
Thank you,
Jennifer Kaplan
