The removal of parklets and parking on the north side, where our business is located, will cause significant disruption, both to us and to other local businesses. The south side has fewer businesses, and they have a private parking lot. It doesn’t make sense to maintain their street parking while removing it from the north, especially since this side has more foot traffic and community engagement, including families and children visiting Humdinger, Rori’s, Harvest Church and Village Cafe. There’s also a safety issue here. Having a driving lane directly against the curb, especially in front of businesses that attract families, feels risky. Our parklet serves as an important buffer for pedestrians. Losing that could put both our patrons and the community at greater risk. Beyond the safety concerns, this decision will have a major financial impact on our business. In this economy, losing such a valuable space could create challenges that we might not recover from. We’ve worked hard to build a sense of community at Humdinger, and I urge you to reconsider the current detour plan and explore alternatives that take both safety and the needs of local businesses into account. Thank you for your time, and I hope we can find a solution that works for everyone. Sincerely, Justin Amy Owner, Humdinger Brewing From:Laura Beth Amy To:public comment Subject:Monday Meeting, item 11a-Traffic Way Bridge Construction Date:Sunday, September 8, 2024 8:53:39 PM Hello Council! I am unable to attend Monday’s meeting, but i wanted to make sure I let you know my feelings on the proposed detour/rerouting plan during the 2025 Traffic Way Bridge construction project. My name is Laura Beth Amy from Humdinger Brewing. I am writing this email to urge the council to consider the significant impact removing our parklet (along with Rori’s) and north side parking removal during the Traffic Way bridge construction would have. We were informed of this plan when it was first announced that the construction would take place, and were willing to do whatever it takes to keep everyone safe. After attending the meeting about the construction and detour routes last week, i have changed my mind. We were informed that the 2 parklets (and parking on our side of the street) would be removed to make way for a driving lane during the construction. The parking on our side of the street (and parklets) would be removed, but the street parking across the street would remain open. To me, this makes absolutely no sense for a few different reasons: •there are very few businesses on the south side of the street in this area (and the ones that are there have a large parking lot for customers). Poke Morro, Klondikes, Mayan Collective and Century 21 have their own parking lot… no need for street parking on that side. If anyone were to to park on the south side of the street, they would likely walk across 3 lanes of traffic to get where they need to go. Unsafe. •the north side of street has WAY more foot traffic in this area of the village, including kids walking home from Paulding and Sunday church foot traffic from Harvest Church (along with church driveway traffic)…not to mention Humdinger, Rori’s, Village Cafe, Posies, Sidewalk Cafe, etc. •with the proposed plan there will be a lane of traffic traveling westbound RIGHT next to the curb, which just seems so unsafe to me, especially in the Village. Especially in front of our Humdinger and Roris. Both of our businesses attract lots of kids. It doesn’t take much for a car to hop a curb, and with all of the businesses and pedestrians there, having a barrier (parking spaces/cars and the parklets) definitely keeps pedestrians and businesses safer. I urge you to ask for a change in the current traffic detour plan. We love our parklet, it’s one of the first things you see when you drive into the Village. It is a great meeting place for the community, and losing that space will hurt us in many ways, including financially. We were not expecting the economy we’re currently in, and after opening our business the day of the Covid shutdowns (and surviving it), losing our parklet from April-December 2025 could put us in the position where we could possibly have to close our business permanently. That is the last thing we want, but it’s the harsh reality. Our outdoor seating area is a huge draw to customers, and fosters a sense of community in the village. While it would be possible for us to dismantle and store our beautiful decking and shade structure, it’s the last thing we want to do. Especially after hearing the proposed plan for the detour. Why not remove the parking on the south side of the street and make that a lane instead? Please keep parking and our parklets on the north side of the street! It just makes so much more sense in so many ways! I urge you to ask city staff to research different lane configurations before the construction starts. I know this is going to be a crazy project, with a huge impact on traffic and accessibility, but please take into consideration the safety of our citizens, as well as the financial impact the parking and parklet removal will have on the north side village businesses. Thank you for reading this, and i hope we can continue this conversation. Removing the parklets and parking on the north side, where we’re located, doesn’t seem like the best move. This side gets way more foot traffic, especially families and kids. The south side has fewer businesses, most with their own parking lots, so it seems odd to keep parking there and take it away from the busier side. Also, putting a driving lane so close to the curb feels unsafe, especially in front of businesses like Humdinger and Rori’s, which attract families. The parklets and parking help keep pedestrians safer. This plan will hurt local businesses, including us at Humdinger, since we rely on outdoor seating to bring in customers. I hope you’ll consider alternative options that keep the parklets and parking on the north side. Thanks for your time. Sincerely, Linda Grimes Humdinger Brewing Employee
