This community event is a commemoration of the signing of Executive Order 9066 by the President of the United States that put 120,000 Japanese Americans into isolated incarceration camps. Our purpose is to make sure that today’s generation will not forget that time when the lives of many of our neighbors here in Arroyo Grande were turned upside down. The suffering in the camps was made lighter with music and sports. The Friendly Neighborhood Big Band will play swing music of the 1940’s. The OperaSLO Orchestra will play my musical composition Behind Barbed Wire, that includes poetry by internees, as well as a documentary, and features world-class soloists. Thank you, Deon Nielsen Price, D.M.A Culver Crest Publications November 2024 Dear Administrator, In 1942, a few weeks prior to graduation, nearly 45% of the Arroyo Grande High School Graduating Class were bussed with their Japanese-American families to isolated internment camps. Historian Jim Gregory (author of World War II Arroyo Grande), composer Deon Nielsen Price (Behind Barbed Wire), and conductor Brian Alhadeff (OperaSLO Grand Orchestra) are pleased to present a commemoration of that tumultuous time in the Clark Center for Performing Arts in A. G. on January 31, 2025. https://clarkcenter.org/shows/behind-barbed-wire/ With a live orchestra and a big band, guest performers, video, poetry, swing music of the 1940’s and narration, this special production shares this region’s local heritage of sacrifice, friendship, patriotism, hard work, and community solidarity. For this community event tickets are only $12. We need to raise $18,000 to cover the production expenses. Will you help by being a sponsor? • $1500 PLATINUM • $1000 GOLD • $500 SILVER • $350 BRONZE. Arroyo Grande Mayor: "Mayor Caren Ray Russom recognizes the community value of the project, and encourages all corporate sponsors to fund it fully."
