RESOLUTION NO. 777
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF ARROYO GRANDE OPPOSING CLOSURE OF PISMO-
OCEANO BEACH TO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC
WHEREAS, the Pismo-Oceano Beach is the longest beach
in the State of California accessible to automobile traffic and
has for years been a popular vacation spot for this reason; and
WHEREAS, automobile access to this beach is a prime
requisite for the enjoyment of its many miles of ocean frontage;
and
WHEREAS, proposals to close portions of the beach would
generate mor problems and hazards than they would eliminate, in
the form of traffic accidents, traffic congestion, crowded condi-
tions in nBarby portions of the beach, and parking problems; and
WHEREAS, restriction of traffic along the beach would
crea~e new, extensive traffic hazards at entrances to nearby State
Highway 1 with traffic jams and almost certain loss of life along
this highwaX; and
WHEREAS, present restricted swimming areas at Pismo Pier
and at Avila Beach a:re located at areas of safer ocean conditions
and warmer waters, guarded, easily accessible, and large enough to
accomrnodat~ increased crowds of the future;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF ARROYO GRANDE DOES HEREBY oppose any closure of any
porticn 0." portions of Pismo-Oceano Beach by any public or private
organizations, departments, groups or other interests,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF ARROYO GRANDE DOES HEREBY recommend and request th~t legislation
be fonnulated and adopted as State Law providing for the perpetuation
of free access to the beach by vehicular traffic, with,provisions.for
proper control of traffic by duly constituted authorities.
On motion of Councilwoman Thompson, seconded by Councilman
Levine, and on the following roll call vote, to wit:
AYES: Cou~cilwoman Thompson, Councilmen Levine,
Schlegel and Mayor Wood
NOES: None
ABSENT: Councilman Burt
the foregoing resolution was passed and adopted this 19th day of
December, 1967.
