RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ARROYO GRANDE IN SUPPORT OF AUGMENTED SEA
WATER INTRUSION PROGRAM ALONG PORTIONS OF
COAST LINES OF SAN LUIS OBISPO AND SANTA
BARBARA COUNTIES
WHEREAS, groundwater extractions in the Arroyo Grande, Nipomo
and Santa Maria Basins exceed the perrenial yield of the basins by
an estimated 49,300 acre-feet; and I
WHEREAS, annual groundwater extractions in excess of annual
recharge result in the lowering of water tables in said basins,
p"sing the threat of sea water intrusion into the fresh watet
aquifers of the basins; and,
WHEREAS, the State Department of Water Resources has instituted
a program of drilling a network of coastal observation wells to
monitor water quality and water levels in the aquifers of these
basins to determine the occurrence or extent of sea water intrusion
into these aquifers; and,
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Arroyo Grande is
cognizant of the potential economic effect of sea water intrusion
on groundwater users within and without said City of Arroyo Grande
and wishes to enlist all possible support for extended sea water
intrusion investigations,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ORDERED by the City Council
of the City of Arroyo Grande that:
1. All possible efforts be extended by the City of Arroyo
Grande in securing support of all affected local organizations to
inform the general public of the existing and/or potential threat
of sea water intrusion into coastal basin groundwater supplies.
2. All affected local agencies and legislative bodies be urged
to contact their appropriate State legislative representatives and
inform them of the nature and extent of the problem and to ask
them to support local requests for additional funds.
3. An amount of $55,200 in additional funds is needed to

provide an effective well network for observation and sampling of
groundwater in Santa Maria, Nipomo and Arroyo Grande Basins.
4. The funds be allocated to the State Department of Water
Resources for the specific purpose of constructing sea water
intrusion monitoring wells along the coastal portions of San Luis
Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties.
On motion by Councilman Burt, seconded by Councilwoman
Thompson, and on the following roll call vote, to wit:

and Mayor Pro Tem Wood,
NOES: None
ABSENT: Councilman McNeil,
