RESOLUTION NO. 3863
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ARROYO GRANDE REVISING THE JOB DESCRIPTION FOR
THE FLEET MAINTENANCE COORDINATOR POSITION
WHEREAS, the City of Arroyo Grande is recommending minor changes to the position
of Fleet Maintenance Coordinator; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Arroyo Grande ("City") deems it in the best
interest of the City to revise the job description for the Fleet Maintenance Coordinator to
reflect these changes, a copy of which is attached hereto as Exhibit "A" and
incorporated herein by this reference,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Arroyo
Grande that the position of Fleet Maintenance Coordinator is hereby established to
perform the duties and responsibilities set forth in the job description so attached as
Exhibit "A", This Resolution shall become effective as of July 13, 2005,

FLEET MAINTENANCE COORDINATOR
Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive /ist of the range of duties performed by
employees in the class, Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job,
DEFINITION
To diagnose, coordinate and monitor mechanical and preventive maintenance repair activities for all City
vehicles and equipment; to select, schedule, monitor and evaluate all contracted mechanical repair staff
and private vendors; and to perform a variety of technical tasks in support of assigned area of
responsibility as needed andlor directed,
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXCERCISED
Receives direction from the Director of Public Works.
Exercises direct supervision over contract staff,
ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification, Any single position may not perform all
of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not /isted here:
Essential Functions:
1, Inspect and diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic defects and problems in automotive,
heavy and light equipment, and other mechanical equipment and perform or recommend
solutions,
2, Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and
methods for providing automotive and equipment repair and preventive maintenance services;
implement policies and procedures,
3, Supervise and coordinate all mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on all City vehicles
and equipment including electrical repairs, gas and diesel automotive repairs and safety
inspections,
4, Select, schedule, monitor and evaluate all contracted mechanical repair staff and private vendors,
5, Maintain inventory of shop supplies, equipment, maintenance and purchase order records on
computer; input data; place parts orders,
6, Maintain contact with outside vendors and special service agencies for needed special repairs;
obtain quotes and bids for service; create, review, and analyze vendor repair evaluations; and
coordinate fuel purchases,
7, Monitor industry recall notices and warrants for needed repairs on all City vehicles.
8, Maintain records and develop reports concerning new or ongoing repairs, parts orders, and fuel
consumption; maintain and file vendor evaluation and management reports; prepare statistical
reports as required.
9. Monitor and inspect automotive shop facilities; schedule maintenance and secure facilities; and
monitor underground fuel storage f?c!lities.

10, Participate in the preparation and administration of assigned budget; submit budget
recommendations; monitor expenditures.
11, Coordinate the placement of the City's radar trailer with the Police Department
Marainal Functions:
1, Monitor the activities of the City's fleet repair program and ensure the program is in compliance with
laws, rules and regulations related to the provision of mechanical and equipment repairs, preventive
maintenance and related services,
2, Maintain awareness of new developments in the field of mechanical repairs; incorporate new
developments as appropriate.
3, Perform a variety of mechanical repairs to vehicles and equipment as required,
4. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required,
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledae of:
Basic operations, services and activities of a mechanical repair and preventive maintenance program,
Principles and practices of supervising and scheduling contracted repair staff or private vendors,
Basic procedures, methods and techniques of budget preparation and control.
Principles and practices of inspection, troubleshooting and repair of internal combustion, diesei engines,
and air brake systems.
Principles and practices of diagnostic testing related to various diesel and gasoline powered equipment
and engines.
Shop tools and automotive maintenance equipment, including the City's radar trailer.
Principles and practices of the City's purchasing policy and service agreements.
Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers.
Principles and procedures of record keeping.
Principles of basic report preparation,
Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and safety re\julations including biannual inspections for
large vehicles.
Abilitv to:
Diagnose and monitor mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance for all City vehicles and
equipment
Recommend and implement goals and objectives for providing repair services.
Interpret and explain City policies and procedures.
Troubleshoot and diagnose problems and causes in automotive, diesel and related systems.
Diagnose mechanical problems of vehicle and heavy and light maintenance equipment
Perform repair services as required.
Read and interpret work from plans, drawings and specifications,
Maintain accurate records and logs of repairs and fuel consumption.
Prepare and administer assigned budget.
Allocate limited resources in a cost effective manner.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Abilitv to:
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
including the general public,
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities,
Experience and Trainina Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities
is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Three years of increasingly responsible vehicle and equipment mechanical repair experience
including one year of administrative responsibility,
Trainina:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by course work or specialized
training in mechanical repair, preventive vehicle maintenance or a related field.
License or Certificate
Possession of, or ability to readily obtain, an appropriate valid driver's license to operate required
vehicles.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions:
Shop environment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases and waste and hazardous
material; moving objects/vehicles,
Phvsical Conditions:
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking,
bending, stooping, kneeling, or standing for prolonged periods of time; moderate to heavy lifting;
operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
