REMARKS BY DEPARTING COUNCIL MEMBER 11

Mayor ,Pope stated the pendulum swings both ways and now the minority
has be,ccmie the maj<;>rity as it ,was when he first became a member of the'fCity
C9,uncil. He stated ,this is good for democracy. He noted among accomplishments
during his term the upgrading of City Staff and stated they have done ~n
excellent job. He rephrased an old saying by quoting ':old politicians:i never
die, they just come back to do battle again"'-' Mr. Pope stated he hoped
to return to the City Council another time. . il

CITY CLERK ADMINISTERS OATH OF OFFICE TO NEWLY-ELECTED COUNCIL MEMBERS:i
City Clerk Ines A. Del Campo adminsistered the Oath of Office,ito
new Council Member Matt Gallagher and returning Council Member B'Ann S~ith
'I
and congratulated them. Mayor Pro-Tern Vandeveer assumed the Chair and:,
welcomed Council Member Smith and Council Member Gallagher. He statedi!it
is his sincere hope that all may work together for the good of the City.
He then turned the meeting over to City Clerk Ines Del Campo. Mrs. Dei Campo

then called for nominations for Mayor. Council Member Hogan nominatedil
Mr. Vandeveer and Council Member Gallagher nominated Mrs. .smith. On m6tion
of Council Member,Millis, seconded by Council Member Gallagher, it was':
unanimously voted to close the nominations for Mayor. City Clerk Del Campo
stated that Council has the option of having a voice vote or a written i!ballot.
On motion of Council Member Millis, seconded by Council Member Hogan, it
was.,,'.unanimously voted to proceed with the voice vote. Mrs. Del Campo
stated she has nominations for Mrs. Smith and Mr. Vandeveer for Mayor tnd
called a roll call vote:

New Mayor Smith assumed-the chair and called for nominations for Mayor Pro-Tern.
Council Member Millis nominated Mr. Gallagher. Council Member Hogan J
nominated Mr. Vandeveer and Mr. Vandeveer declined the nomination. On :!:'~
motion ,of ,Council Member ,Millis, seconded by Council Member Hogan, it was
unanimously yoted to close the nominations for Mayor P~o-Tem" On motion
of Council Member Millis, seconded by Council Member Smithi'it was unanimously
voted to appoint Mr.Gallagher as Mayor 'Pro-Tern.
COMMENTS BY NEWLY-ELECTED, COUNCIL MEMBER
Council Member Gallagher thanked everyone who worked for his
campaign and stated that he ran on the premise that change is needed and
feels that is the mandate of the people. He stated he wishes to work for
a city council which is representative 'of the people",
COMMENTS BY NEWLY-ELECTED MAYOR
Mayor Smith stated she is glad to be back on the Council and thanked
those who worked in her campaign. She thanked all those who sent her cards,
letters and flowers. She stated the.people are concerned about growth
and hopes that Council can work together;' She stated she will represent the
City of Arroyo Grande to the best of her ability.
