Minutes 1993-09-21 171 MINUTES SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1993 CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS, 215 EAST BRANCH STREET ARROYO GRANDE, CALIFORNIA The city Council of the city of Arroyo Grande met at 5:00 P.M., with Mayor Matthew Peter Gallagher, III, presiding. " Mayor Gallagher led the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag. 1. ROLL CALL In addition to Mayor Gallagher, council Members present were Drew Brandy, Bernard Burke, Gene Moots and James Souza. Staff Members present were city Manager Chris Christianson, city Clerk Nancy Davis and Parks and Recreation Director John Keisler. 2. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. 3. RECOMMENDATION FROM THE PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION TO CHANGE THE NAME OF "CHRISTMAS TREE ISLAND PARK" (LOCATED ON TRAFFIC WAY) TO THE "ROBERT 'BOB' COLLETT PARK" (AS REOUESTED BY THE ARROYO GRANDE FIRE FIGHTERS ASSOCIATION) Mayor Gallagher referred to the September 16, 1993, Staff Report of the Parks and Recreation Director and said the Parks and I Recreation Commission had voted unanimously to name the park I located at Traffic Way, Bridge Street and Nelson Street after former fire fighter Bob Collett, who served for 30 years, and all the other volunteers who have given of themselves throughout the years. MARIE BURT of 414 Orchard Avenue requested that the Council also honor Harry Hart, former Arroyo Grande volunteer fire fighter for 30 years, State Fire Marshal, former Arroyo Grande Fire Chief and founder of the park. She said Mr. Hart had developed the park in the mid-1950s from a triangular piece of dirt left after the realignment of Traffic Way. She said for years Mr. Hart did the maintenance on the park. She said the city Council at that time had discussed naming the park after Mr. Hart. i Mr. Keisler said he had spoken with Harry Hart's son, Bill, who said that Mr. Hart and his oldest son had planted the original lawn and trees at the park. He said when Mr. Hart died, memorial money was received from the community and it was used to plant trees and place a park bench there. After further examination of the issue by Council Members, the Fire Chief Kurt Latipow; Fire captain Carl Brandt, president of the Volunteer Fire Fighters Association; Mrs. Burt, and Mr. Keisler, it was moved by Souza/Moots, and the motion passed unanimously to name the park the "Hart-Collett Volunteer Fire Fighters Memorial Park." The city's Volunteer Fire Fighters were directed to develop 172 ~ CITY COUNCIL MINUTES SEPTEMBER 21, 1993 criteria for future recognition of fire fighters at the park. Mayor Gallagher announced that. the park's dedication ceremony would take place at 12 noon Sunday, September 26, 1993. He said city officials, other fire agencies and the public would be invited. 4.
