A RESOLtTrION OF THE CITY COtm:IL OF THE
CITY OF ARROYO GRANDE OPPOSI~ THE
MISLEADI~ "RENrAL ASSISTAN:E" INITIATIVE
WHEREAs, mobile home OWners in our jUrisdiction are overwhelmingly senior
citizens and low-income families living on fixed retirement or severely-limited
incomes; and
WHEREAs, n~arly 100 California counties, cities, and towns have passed sane form
of mobile home ~ent protection ordinance to safeguard these vulnerable elderly and
low-income families from excessive rent increases; and
WHEREAs , mobile home owners are some\'.hat captive, due to the shortage of
available mobile home park rental spaces; and
WHEREAs, the City Council opposes any statewide preerrption of local control to
make policy responding to the crisis in mobile home park sp:lce rents and
availability; and
~, mobile home owners often forfeit their only asset, their home, when
they cannot pay excessive rents; and
WHER.E'As, an initiative nCM in circulation, misleadingly titled the "Rental
Assistance" initiative, would void the rneaningful protections in those 100
ordinances; and
WHEREAs, that initiative is being misrepresented as one that would assist mobile
hane owners in llEeting their rents, rather than one that would all"" mobile hane park
landlords to raise rents without restrictions.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City Council of the City of Arroyo Grande
opposes the "Rental Assistance" initiative currently in circulation and directs that
such OPPOsition be cOOlITUnicated to the Legislature and the Governor and those
advocacy organizations to which we belong.
On motion of Council Merrber Burke, seconded by Council Merrber Souza, and on the
fOllCMing roll call vote, to wit:
