Honorary Proclamation
Recognizing PaiCak PateCas a
NationalMerit Scholar
WHEREAS, the National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition
and scholarships for high school students;and
WHEREAS, scholars are selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school
counselors who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the finalists and
their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades
earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community
activities; an essay written by the finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official;
and
WHEREAS, Palak Patel,a four-year Arroyo Grande High School student,achieved a 4.79 weighted
GPA her senior year, has a 4.5 cumulative GPA at Arroyo Grande High School, and will graduate in
June 2015;and
WHEREAS, Palak not only succeeded in academics, she participated for three years on the Arroyo
Grande High School Eagles Cross Country team; served as a member and Vice President of the
Asian Appreciation Club;and was a member of the Baking Club;and
WHEREAS, Palak has been involved in community service activities,working at the Saint Patrick's
Outreach Center, and serving as co-president of a youth group associated with the India Club;and
WHEREAS, as a result of her outstanding achievements and community involvement, Palak was
among 2,500 students chosen to receive a National Merit Scholarship out of more than 15,000
finalists;and
WHEREAS, Palak was awarded a$2,500 scholarship and will begin college in the Fall.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Jim Hill, Mayor of the City of Arroyo Grande, on
behalf of the City Council, do hereby recognize Palak Patel on her selection as a National Merit
Scholar, commend her for her outstanding achievements, and extend sincere best wishes for
continued success in the years to come.
