Background
In 2002, City Council approved Public Art Program and Process
In 2006, City Council approved Public Art Donation Program
October, 2011, City Council amended guidelines regarding art
on public property
January, 2013 Arroyo Grande Public Art Committee formed
Proposed sculpture is the fifth (5) art piece under these guidelines

Here is the Arboring Our Roots of Diversity sculpture diagram. The sculpture depicts a tree shape, with branches and leaves assembled to form the continents of the world. The tree will
utilize a steel pole covered in glass fiber reinforced concrete to give the trunk some thickness. The arbor of the tree will be steel as well, bent in varying ways to provide the arbor’s
density. The sculpture will stand at a maximum height of 12 feet and will be supported by a concrete base. The steps of the concrete base will include the following words:

Process
Public Art Panel is the approval authority for the project
City Council must hold a public hearing for the purpose of obtaining community input
Panel consists of:
2 representatives
from the property owner;
2 representatives from the County Arts Council;
1 ARC
1 Chamber or VIA;
1 South County Historical Society

Criteria
Relationship to the social, cultural and historical identity of the area;
Evaluation of artistic excellence;
Appropriateness of scale, form, material, content and design relative to
the immediate and general neighborhood;
Appropriateness of proposed materials as regards to structural and surface integrity, protection against vandalism, public safety and weathering;
Ease
of maintenance;
Appropriateness of proposed method of installation of artwork and safety and structural factors involved in installation;
Artist’s experience in working on comparable
projects.

Recommendation
It is recommended the City Council receive public comment and provide input to the Public Art Panel on the proposed sculpture
