CC 2017-09-12_06a Proclamation_Womans ClubOF I '\ \\\'~ "lucA LIFO R ~ 't~~ HONORARY PROCLAMATION CELEBRATING THE so™ ANNIVERSARY OF THE WOMAN'S CLUB OF ARROYO GRANDE WHEREAS, in the 1930's, a very small group of women began to meet in their homes to get better acquainted and to share ideas about their children, families, gardens, books, recipes, and more; arid , WHEREAS, from this small start, the Woman's Club of Arroyo Grande was born and on April 16, 1937, its first official meeting was held with 150 women in attendance; and WHEREAS, the Woman's Club was established as a non-profit, philanthropic club designed to promote the general welfare of the community and the Club raises funds through bazaars, rummage sales, flower shows, Bingo, and book sales for educational scholarships and local charities; and WHEREAS, as this organization, based on friendship and unity was formed, it was believed that the new Club needed a fundraising project that would involve the entire community, so President Sibyl Poyner suggested that the Club sponsor a country or county fair as its first project, emphasizing the contribution of the local farmers; and WHEREAS, the Club members voted to have a country fair to be held at harvest time that would include exhibits, concess_ions, entertainment, and food; and WHEREAS, the very first "Arroyo Grande Harvest Festival" was held at the old Orchard Avenue Elementary School with over 1,100 people in attendance, and the Harvest Festival has since become a community tradition and· continues to be held in the City every year during the last full weekend in September; and WHEREAS, as early as the 1950's, the Woman's Club and the City began a joint venture to build a "nice clubhouse that would be a credit to the City"; and WHEREAS, in July 1973, the Woman's Club of Arroyo Grande and the City entered into an agreement to develop and maintain a community center, to be called the "Arroyo Grande Woman's Club and Community Center", and the facility has since been actively utilized by the Woman's Club for its meeting place and special events, and by the City for community meetings, recreational activities, and special events. ' NOW !HEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Mayor Hill, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby thank the Woman's Club for its long-time partnership with the City and further recognize the Woman's Club of Arroyo Grande on the celebration of its 80th Anniversary.
