A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF ARROYO GRANDE DESIGNATING THE SWEET PEA
(LATHYRUS ODORATUS) AS THE OFFICIAL CITY
FLOWER
WHEREAS, the City of Arroyo Grande ("City") has a long and storied agricultural
history, including floral farming and elaborate and beautiful floral displays; and
WHEREAS, the Sweet Pea (Lathyrus odoratus) has important historical significance in
the City, including the development of excellent commercial sweet pea seeds by the
Routzahn Family in the late 1800's and staging the annual Sweet Pea Fair at which
Sweet Pea blossoms were used to adorn decorations and American Flags; and
WHEREAS, America In Bloom is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to
promoting nationwide beautification programs and personal and community involvement
through the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle
enhancement; and
WHEREAS, Arroyo Grande In Bloom is an active participant in the America In Bloom
program and has developed numerous beautification projects in the City; and
WHEREAS, the Arroyo Grande In Bloom Executive Board recommends the City
Council adopt a Resolution designating the Sweet Pea (Lathyrus odoratus) as the
official City flower.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Arroyo
Grande hereby designates the Sweet Pea (Lathyrus odoratus) as the official flower of
the City of Arroyo Grande.
On motion of Council Member Costello, seconded by Council Member Guthrie, and on
the following roll call vote, to wit:
AYES: Council Members Costello, Guthrie, Arnold, Fellows, and Mayor Ferrara
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
the foregoing Resolution was passed and adopted this 9~h day of September, 2008.
