CC 2019-01-08_10a Supplemental No 1MEMORANDUM TO: CITY COUNCIL FROM: JESSICA MATSON, DEPUTY CITY CLERK SUBJECT: SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AGENDA ITEM 10.a. – JANUARY 8, 2019 CITY COUNCIL MEETING CONSIDERATION OF APPOINTMENT TO FILL CITY COUNCIL VACANCY DATE: JANUARY 4, 2019 Attached is correspondence received January 4, 2019. cc: City Attorney City Clerk Public Review Binder 1 Subject:Open Council seat On Dec 14, 2018, at 10:29 AM, Ellen Gaver, EcoTeamUnited < wrote: Dear Council Member Storton, I am writing to voice my concern about the process in place to fill Mayor Ray's seat on City Council. As I understand it, the Council is accepting applications for the vacant seat and will vote on and appoint THEIR choice for the open seat. It seems to me that if our Council is intended to be truly representative of the people, that the voting citizens of Arroyo Grande should be the ones to fill that seat. We all knew that there would be a third seat open should Ms. Ray win the Mayoral race, which she did, but now our right to choose our representative is being usurped by the governing Council. I respecfully request that the following two options be considered: 1. We hold a special election to fill the vacant seat. 2. The person who received the third highest number of votes in the November election be advanced to the open seat. Please, let's keep our Council representative of the citizens of Arroyo Grande. Thank you for your consideration. Thank you for your consideration. Piper Adelman January 2, 2019 Dear Ms. Wetmore and esteemed City Council Members, I am honored to write to you in support of Mrs. Lan George and her application to fill the current vacancy on the Arroyo Grande City Council. I first met Lan as a parent volunteer with Arroyo Grande High School Athletic Boosters. She was the parent liaison with both Girls’ Tennis and Softball and when we very much needed it, stepped up to fill a time consuming, labor intensive position on our board. At that time, I had no idea of all the other responsibilities and commitments that claimed her energy. In hindsight, I have come to think of this as a hallmark of her character. Lan sees a need and does her best to find meaningful solutions, without complaint or fanfare. She just gets the job done. Since that first meeting, several years ago, I have come to find out that Lan served on both the Architectural Review Committee and the Planning Commission, in addition to running her own business and being a very involved parent. I learned the extensiveness of her ongoing volunteerism not only for our school district, but for our community at large. I have witnessed her calm demeanor and measured approach to the problems and people that come before a council. She is inherently respectful and intelligent and these qualities shine through in her interactions with others. I understand that this incoming City Council is one that truly values civility and teamwork. I think, with her background in city government commissions and committees, her deep concern and stewardship of Arroyo Grande, her ongoing commitment to community, Lan George would be a valuable addition to the our current city council. I am indebted and inspired by her willingness to extend her desire to support her city and all of us by being a member of city council. I hope you will give her application careful consideration. I have such admiration and gratitude for anyone seeking to serve their community in this most public of ways. I deeply appreciate each of you as you begin this journey of a new council, in a new year. Thank you all. Sincerely, Piper Adelman Arroyo Grande, CA
