My daughter and her husband live in Grover Beach, and 8 years ago I bought a home on the Mesa to be nearer them and my two grandchildren. Last January, I sold my home in Sacramento and moved here full time -although I still spend one week per month at my office in Sacramento where I lead Ogilvy's public affairs and political practice. I am delighted to write this letter on behalf of Lan George. After nearly one-half century in politics I've learned that Speaker Tip O'Neill was totally accurate: All politics is local and the appointment of the right local representative on the council is critically important for the future of this delightful community. I met Lan George more than a decade ago when her children and my granddaughter competed with a local dance company (D-Pac.) Those dance competitions found us travelling up and down California -and sometimes into Nevada -cheering on dancers from the Central Coast and watching an incredibly diverse representation of young California artists. We all learned a lot about our children and ourselves during those long weekends of competition, and from the beginning Lan struck me as a wonderfully organized woman, who soon became a trusted asset to the group and all the families, to say nothing of her command of the dancers and her own children's: competitive work. When my grandchildren entered Arroyo Grande High School and became active in school sports, I wasn't surprised to see Lan again in another organizer role, helping the AG High Boosters -and making sure the "Friday Night Lights" football games, and other sports events, were as close to perfection (and fun) as the student athletes deserved. As my grandchildren advanced in water polo, there was Lan pitching in again whenever help from parents was needed. .., ,, I knew Lan was an accomplished social media expert and worked for a local PR firm, but I didn't know (until I moved here permanently) that her desire to contribute to the community also included important community commissions and committees. As you know she is currently a member of our Planning Commission and was a member ofthe Architectural Review Commission. Decisions made by both of these groups are and will prove critical to the future of the AG. Lan will hit the ground running and can take this knowledge and experience to the council immediately. There is no question that Lan George's background, experience and work ethic make her a perfect candidate for this open position -but I would argue she has another asset that should be taken into consideration. She is not only a woman, but a woman of color. Last week the United States Congress swore in the most diverse group of new Congressmembers than ever before. That's a milestone we need to emulate everywhere. San Luis Obispo County does have a relatively encouraging number of women in leadership roles, but we need more, and we sorely lack in our commitment to making sure our leaders represent the diverse backgrounds and cultures tht reflect all of the people who live here. Lan George would be an asset to any community -but I think everyone is a winner if she is appointed to this position. I'm sorry I won't be at your meeting. In fact, this is the week I'm in my Sacramento office, but of course I'd be happy to answer any of your questions and urge you all to appoint Lan George.
