HONORARY PROCLAMATION
DECLARING JUNE 2019 AS
"ALZHEIMER'S AND BRAIN AWARENESS MONTH"
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease, a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder, tragically robs
individuals of their memories and leads to progressive mental and physical impairments; and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States, the 2nd leading
cause of death in California, the 3rd leading cause of death in San Luis Obispo (SLO) County and is the
only cause of death in the top ten that has no cure, no treatment, and no way to slow its progression;
and
WHEREAS, more than 5.8 million people in the United States are living with Alzheimer's, including
670,000 in California and over 10,000 in SLO County; and
WHEREAS, there are over 1.6 million dedicated caregivers who provide unpaid care at home in the
State of California valued at over $23 billion; and
WHEREAS, according to the National Institute on Aging, Alzheimer's disease also indirectly costs
businesses up to $37 billion a year in the United States in lost productivity for employees who miss
work or leave their jobs to provide care for a relative or loved one; and
WHEREAS, with early detection and diagnosis, individuals and their families can gain access to
treatment medications, enroll in critical research trials, fully participate in planning for the future, and
receive help and support from the Alzheimer's Association; and
WHEREAS, there is a need to raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease and to honor all the
caregivers who support and care for loved ones with Alzheimer's disease.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Caren Ray Russom, Mayor of the City of Arroyo Grande, do
hereby declare June 2019 as Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month in Arroyo Grande, and encourage
our citizens to join in honoring all Arroyo Grande families affected by Alzheimer's disease.
