BERGMAN, CITY MANAGER BY: KELLY WETMORE, DIRECTOR OF LEGISLATIVE AND INFORMATION SERVICES/CITY CLERK SUBJECT: CONSIDERATION OF SELECTION OF A COUNCIL MEMBER AND ALTERNATE TO ATTEND THE MONTHLY SOUTH COUNTY CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE MEETINGS DATE: JULY 23, 2019 SUMMARY OF ACTION: Selection of a City Council Member and an Alternate to attend the monthly South County Chambers of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee meetings. IMPACT ON FINANCIAL AND PERSONNEL RESOURCES: There is no fiscal impact from this action. RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended the Council select a Council Member and an Alternate to attend the monthly South County Chambers of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee meetings. BACKGROUND: The South County Chambers of Commerce (“Chamber”) is an organization that serves business members in Arroyo Grande, Avila Beach, Grover Beach, Nipomo, Oceano, and Pismo Beach. The Chamber offers its members the ability to make connections with other members, stay informed of local issues, and promote their businesses. The Chamber is committed to developing and maintaining a vital and thriving economy through its efforts to promote the community, provide networking opportunities, represent the interests of business with government, and take action on behalf of businesses on various business related issues. The Chamber oversees various member-driven committees. Active committees include Ambassadors, Marketing and Beautification, Governmental Affairs, and Special Events. Item 11.a. - Page 1 CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERATION OF SELECTION OF A COUNCIL MEMBER AND ALTERNATE TO ATTEND THE MONTHLY SOUTH COUNTY CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE MEETINGS JULY 23, 2019 PAGE 2 ANALYSIS OF ISSUES: The Chamber has extended an invitation to a member of the Arroyo Grande City Council to attend the monthly Governmental Affairs Committee meeting and provide a brief update on upcoming business related items or issues, as well as to provide general City updates and highlights of City programs, services, or special events. The selected Council Member and Alternate would not be a voting member of the committee. The Chamber Governmental Affairs Committee meets the third Wednesday of the month, from 10:30 to 11:30 pm. at the Chamber conference room located at 800 W. Branch Street, with networking and a luncheon program immediately thereafter. ALTERNATIVES: The following alternatives are provided for the Council’s consideration: 1. Select a Council Member and an Alternate to attend the monthly Chamber Governmental Affairs Committee meetings; 2. Do not select a Council Member or Alternate for this purpose; or 3. Provide other direction to staff. ADVANTAGES: Selection of a Council Member and Alternate will provide for a City representative to attend the monthly Chamber Governmental Affairs Committee meeting to represent Arroyo Grande’s interests, and provide an opportunity for the City to receive preliminary feedback and input from the Chamber membership on business related items. DISADVANTAGES: No disadvantages are identified. ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW: No environmental review is required for this item. PUBLIC NOTIFICATION AND COMMENTS: The Agenda was posted at City Hall and on the City’s website in accordance with Government Code Section 54954.2. Item 11.a. - Page 2
