CC 2019-10-08_06a Honorary Proclamation Recognizing Dick BlankenburgOF , / , '; /\\\\'i.-:,,~---- ,~~~ HONORARY PROCLAMATION IN RECOGNITION OF DICK BLANKENBURG WHEREAS, Dick Blankenburg moved to San Luis Obispo County in 1959; and WHEREAS, Dick Blankenburg served his country in Germany as part of the United States Army in the 1960s; and WHEREAS, Dick Blankenburg and his wife Maxine were instrumental in bringing Special Olympics to San Luis Obispo County in 1969, starting with 4 athletes and now, after over 50 years of involvement, has over 700 participants in San Luis Obispo County and 38,000 in Southern California; and WHEREAS, Dick Blankenburg and his family purchased the Arroyo Grande Herald Recorder, and during the 1970's, the family combined the Arroyo Grande Herald-Recorder, Pismo Times, and Grover City Press to form the Five Cities Times Press Recorder which they operated for nearly 30 years; and WHEREAS, Dick Blankenburg has been a member of the Pismo Beach Kiwanis Club for over 60 years, and in 1994, he was honored with the Distinguished Service Award and his family received the Family of the Year Service Award; and WHEREAS, Dick Blankenburg has served the community of Arroyo Grande and surrounding areas in various capacities and has contributed to making Arroyo Grande and the Five Cities area a great place to live, work, and visit. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Caren Ray Russom, Mayor of the City of Arroyo Grande, do hereby recognize Dick Blankenburg for over 60 years of service and dedication to the community.
