SUBJECT: AUTHORIZATION TO PURCHASE REPLACEMENT TRASH PUMP

SUMMARY OF ACTION:
Purchase of replacement trash pump.
IMPACT ON FINANCIAL AND PERSONNEL RESOURCES:
The approved FY 2020/21 budget includes funding of $32,000 in the sewer fund for a
trash pump.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended the City Council approve the purchase of a 6” trash pump from United
Rentals in the amount of $30,408.59.
BACKGROUND:
The existing 6” portable trash pump is 40 years old and meets the replacement criteria
per Administrative Policy #C-007 (Attachment 1).
ANALYSIS OF ISSUES:
Competitive quotations were obtained for one new Multiquip Model No. MQ600HTB trash
pump. United Rentals in San Luis Obispo quoted the lowest price. The pump will be
used during extended power outages to provide service to one of the City’s five (5) sewer
lift stations. The need for a reliable portable trash pump has become a priority due to the
possibility of extended Public Safety Power Shutoffs by PG&E. The pump will also be
used to dewater the City’s holding basins if needed during severe storm events.
ADVANTAGES:
The purchase of a new trash pump will provide the sewer and storm water collection
systems a reliable unit to prevent system overflows in the event of extended power
outages.
DISADVANTAGES:
No disadvantages are noted at this time.

ALTERNATIVES:
The following alternatives are provided for the Council’s consideration:
1. Approve the purchase of a replacement trash pump in the amount of $30,408.59;
2. Do not approve the purchase;
3. Modify as appropriate and approve staff’s recommendation; or
4. Provide direction to staff.
ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW:
No environmental review is required for this item.
PUBLIC NOTIFICATION AND COMMENTS:
The Agenda was posted at City Hall and on the City’s website in accordance with
Government Code Section 54954.2.
