CITY OF
HONORARY PROCLAMATION
COMMENDING POLICE SERGEANT MICHAEL SMILEY
FOR BRA VERY IN THE LINE OF DUTY
WHEREAS, City of Arroyo Grande Police Sergeant Michael Smiley is an 18-year
veteran of the Arroyo Grande Police Department; and
WHEREAS, on June 11, 2020 , Sergeant Michael Smiley was deployed as a member of
the San Luis Obispo Regional SWAT Team to search for an armed murder suspect near
the Paso Robles river bed; and
WHEREAS, while searching and pursuing the suspect, Sergeant Smiley was struck b y
gunfire by the suspect who ambushed the team; and
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Caren Ray Russom, Mayor of the City
of Arroyo Grande, do hereby commend SERGEANT MICHAEL SMILEY for his bravery
and leadership during a time of crisis. The City appreciates your continued dedication
and loyalty to the community as well as your courage to ensure the freedom of others.
