'.'"~ >~. , ' WHEREAS, by reso1\ttiot\aa#,~fiebruar.i 8, 1972, the Array, Gro,n<lL Ce", Council opposed the proposedWilde'rn~~s classification tlf LOPC3-< Cfmy."n;;,pd WHEREAS, the Lopez Canyo11.cQil1pt'ises an important portion of the watershed of Lopez Lake, which is themaill watex supply for thee City of Arroyo Grande and other communities in th" southwestE,rly portIon of San Luis Obispo County; and WHEREAS, because of its proximity and its Interest in the Lop",,, lakE water supply, the City of Arroyo Gt'ande considers that it has greatbr r",,-son for concern over the questlon of the 'proposed Wilderness classification of Lopez Canyon than other nearby communities; and WHEREAS, House of Representatives Bill 16171 as proposed by Congn.ss- man Burt L. Talcott is drafted to provlde that Lopez Canyon Wild,'rn"ss shall be administered in accordance with provisions of the Wilderness Act with certain exceptions, wliich would make tills Wild"rness area amenabl" to JT,i1n' flexible control by the Forest Service, in that sald Act provides that "present roads, firebreaks, and helicopter pads used bxclusively to pnevent, control or suppress fires or floods within this wilderness area may be maintained and operated in a manner that is consistent with past practic.;s without prior approval of the Secretary"; and WHEREAS, said proposed Bill ;rhH'e m(,sto th" needB of Lopez Canyon than previous legislation opposed by the City of Arroyo Grande Resolution No. 971, BE AND IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Arroyo Grande endorse H,R. Bill No, 16171 relating to "Lopez Canyon Wilderness".
