A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARROYO
GRANDE IN SUPPORT OF CALIFORNIA FOR THE LOCATION OF
THE SPACE SHUTTLE IAUNCH & RETRIEVAL SITE
WHEREAS, America's space technology is a vibrant force that provides
many economic and social spin-offs that benefit America's economy and prestige; and
WHEREAS, the cut back in aerospace spending and a general economic
slow-down have resulted in the layoff of thousands of research, professional,
and craft employees who are willing and anxious to work; and
WHEREAS, the Space Shuttle, designed to put men and materials into space
economically with reusable vehicles, has top priority in America's space program; and
WHEREAS, the required cadre of space engineers and scientists, manu-
facturing and test facilities, necessary to do a high performance, cost effective
program are located in California; and
WHEREAS, combining Vandenberg and Edwards Air Force Bases offers
optimum climate, existing facilities in close proximity to manufacturing sites,
and the essential location for polar orbital launches; and
WHEREAS, the launch and retrieval site should be located near the manu-
facturing sites for reasons of economy;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARROYO
GRANDE, COUNTY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO, StATE OF CALIFORNIA, supports the location of
the Space Shuttle launch and retrieval operation in California,
On motion of Counci~man Wood, seconded by Councilman Talley and on the
following roll call vote, to wit:
AYES: Council Members Schlegel, Thompson, Wood, Talley and Mayor Levine
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
the foregoing resolution was passed and adopted this 10th day of August, 1971.
