R 3153 ~ . RESOLUTION NO. -ll23 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ARROYO GRANDE RECOGNIZING THE CITY OF ARROYO GRAND.E AS A TRANSPORTATION PARTNER WITH THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT COMMISSION'S CENTER FOR LIVABLE COMMUNITIES WHEREAS, the current patterns of land use in' many communities has increased our dependence on the automobile and is largely responsible for the 2% annual increase in vehicle miles traveled in the U. S.; and WHEREAS, this dependence on the automobile results in increased pollutant emissions., the loss of precious open space, the need for building and extending costly roads and public services, the inequitable distribution of economic resources, and the loss of a sense of community; and . WHEREAS, appropriate mixed use, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian-oriented development and redevelopment can reduce auto dependency and vehicle miles traveled and create more livable and resource-efficient communities; and WHEREAS, the City of Arroyo Grande contributes to its environment, economic health, and sense of community by adopting land use policies that encourage transit, bicycle, and pedestrian-oriented development and redevelopment; and WHEREAS, the Center of livable Communities provides assistance to cities and counties through the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency's Transportation Partners program; and WHEREAS, the Transportation Partners program supports community transportation solutions across the country through information services, technical assistance, and recognition; and WHEREAS, cities and counties that participate in the Transportation Partners program receive recognition and support for their efforts to improve their land use patterns and reduce their residents' dependence on the automobile; and WHEREAS, the Center for livable Communities would lik.e to recognize the City of Arroyo Grande as one of its Transportation Partners, which comes without cost to the participating jurisdiction. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Arroyo Grande, State of California, agrees to become a Transportation Partner with the local Government Commission's Center for livable Communities.
